Best Invoicing Apps for Contractors in 2026, Compared
Best invoicing apps for contractors in 2026: SnipInvoice, Wave, Zoho, Square, Joist, Invoice Simple, QuickBooks, Jobber and Housecall Pro compared fairly.
There's no single "best" invoicing app for every contractor. A solo handyman who sends a dozen invoices a month needs something very different from an HVAC company with five trucks and a dispatcher. The right app is the one that fits how you work, how many invoices you send and whether you need extras like card payments, scheduling or full bookkeeping.
This guide compares nine invoicing apps that US contractors commonly consider, with pricing and features taken from each company's own website in October 2026. Prices and plans change often, so check each site before you decide.
Disclosure: This article is published by SnipInvoice, and SnipInvoice is one of the apps listed. We've tried to describe every product fairly, including our own limitations.
How we compared the apps
We looked at the factors that matter most to trade contractors:
- Price and plan limits: Monthly cost and how many invoices you can send
- Mobile use: Can you create and send invoices from your phone?
- Estimates/quotes: Can you quote and convert to an invoice?
- Payments: Can customers pay by card or bank transfer through the app?
- Extras: Scheduling, bookkeeping, team features
- Fit: Which kind of contractor it suits best

Simple invoicing apps
SnipInvoice
Best for: Plumbers, electricians, HVAC techs and other US trade pros who want to create invoices fast from their phone, by speaking or typing.
You describe the job ("Replaced 50-gallon water heater, $1,450, two hours labor at $95") and SnipInvoice builds a draft. Prices you didn't say are left blank and marked "Needs a price" rather than guessed, and you review every line before creating the invoice.
- Pricing (snipinvoice.com): Free, 3 invoices a month with a small "Made with SnipInvoice" footer; Starter $5.99 for 6; Busy $13.99 for 15; Unlimited $19.99 a month. Quotes are free on every plan.
- Strengths: Voice or typed entry, per-line tax, gapless invoice numbers, quotes that convert to invoices, record payments you took (including partial payments), team roles, export everything.
- Things to know: SnipInvoice doesn't process card payments; you record payments taken by cash, check, bank transfer or a card taken outside the app. You share the PDF from your own phone; the app doesn't email clients for you. US businesses only. No scheduling or bookkeeping.
Invoice Simple
Best for: Contractors who want a straightforward mobile invoicing app with online payments.
- Pricing (invoicesimple.com): Essentials $6.99/mo (up to 3 invoices a month), Plus $14.99/mo (up to 10), Premium $21.99/mo (unlimited); annual options available. The mobile free trial gives 14 days of Premium.
- Strengths: Online payments, read receipts, estimates, photos and signatures on higher plans, deposits on Premium.
- Things to know: Invoice limits vary by plan, so check how many you send monthly.
Joist
Best for: Contractors focused on estimates and turning them into invoices, especially remodelers and general trades.
- Pricing (joist.com): Plans include Basics (up to 5 documents a month), Pro at $17/mo billed monthly (unlimited documents), Elite at $32/mo and Run (with jobs and scheduling). 14-day free trial; Joist says its free plan is no longer available.

How to choose the right app
| If you... | Consider |
|---|---|
| Send a few invoices a month and want speed from your phone | A simple mobile invoicing app |
| Want customers to pay by card through the invoice | An app with built-in payments (and budget for processing fees) |
| Want invoicing and bookkeeping in one place | Accounting software with invoicing |
| Have a team, a schedule and a dispatcher | A field service management platform |
| Are on a tight budget | Start with a free plan and check its limits |
A few more tips:
- Count your invoices. Plans with monthly limits can be great value, or frustrating, depending on volume.
- Check the total cost, including processing fees and extra users.
- Try before you commit. Most apps offer a free plan or a free trial.
- Make sure you can export your data if you ever switch.
- Ask your accountant what works best with your bookkeeping.
FAQ
What is the best invoicing app for a solo contractor?
It depends on your volume and needs. Solo contractors often do well with a simple mobile invoicing app; if you also want bookkeeping, look at tools that combine both.
Are free invoicing apps good enough for contractors?
Many are. Free plans often have limits on invoice volume, branding or features, so check those before relying on one.
Do I need field service software or just an invoicing app?
If you mainly need to send quotes and invoices, an invoicing app is usually enough. Field service platforms make sense when you're scheduling and dispatching a team.
Which invoicing apps let customers pay by card?
Several do, including Square, Wave, Invoice Simple, Joist, QuickBooks, Jobber and Housecall Pro, with processing fees. SnipInvoice records payments you take but doesn't process cards.
